Tobago’s Pride

Irish Tobagonian Yarn
An old Tobagonian shipwreck story from the 1860’s retold from the perspective of the ship’s spirit “the Duchess of Leinster. Follow the saga of the Duchess from her grand launch in Dublin to her tragic final on the shores of Tobago.

Nature of the Story
Illustrated short story is based on the true-life events of the Irish Ship Name Duchess of Leinster (1843-63). The story starts in the harbor of Dublin Ireland and ends on the beaches of the Island of Tobago. As the story unfolds there are three types of color text that add some flavor to the story. The definitions of the words, phrases and ideas are explained at the back of the story in the section entitled “Word and Phrases”

Ship's Spirit
For this story, the Duchess of Leinster’s spirit is intermingled with La Diablesse so she appears more as an Irish-Caucasian and has shamrock symbolism more in her ornaments and jewelry. However, her colors are red, white and black to represent the Trinidad and Tobago flag. The combination of imagery is for the sake of the story where Le Diablesse comes to help Duchess of Leinster avenge herself on men who wronged her (Pierce and Strood).
